There are 3 kinds of bicycles which are prevalent in India which are manufactured by Hero, Avon, Tata, Kross, BSA, Murugappa, Decathlon, Alpha Vector and many other brands
- Standard Cycle - Which is prevalently used in rural areas for commuting to near by areas by young and old people both. Pic is as shown below. Its been driven across entire nation from North to South and from East to West in rural areas. Demand for it are quite low in Western part of our country. Generally brazing of joints are done for higher strength of joints, but some manufacturers are making standard cycle by welding technique.

We at our young age started learning to ride bicycle on this type of bicycle. Our initial days cycling method was known as "Kaichi Cycling". Below is a picture, which most of can corelate with our childhood days

- MTB Cycle - Its full form is Mountain Terrain Bicycle. Popularly known as MTB among youngsters and most in demand because of popular myth among Indians that a heavy person load can be taken only by a broader looking tire. Also new designs and features (gears, broader head tubes, shockers -front & rear, bottle holder, alloy frame, alloy wheels, multilayered rims, straight & wider handle, attractive colours, adjustable seat, stylish mudguards and many others) had make these more and more attractive and popular among youngsters, who are fond of riding them from a very young age. A pic of MTB cycle is as below for your reference. Generally these cycles are designed for off-roading purpose, but Indians prefer to ride them across all terrains.

Professionals use it for adventure riding and off-roading competitions. Take a view of it
- Road Cycle - This segment is the most underrated segment, as the frame designs are very simple with thinner tube, curved or straight handle and less wider tires. It can have other features to MTB cycle like - gears, front shox, dual disc, bottle holder, quick release rim, alloy wheels and many others. Also this kind of cycles are to be used in good road conditions, therefore preferred to be used in city areas only. Popularity of this segment is low because of a popular myth which also makes MTB cycles popular - Wider tires & wider looking cycle are suited for bulky and heavy people. A pic of cycle is attached as below for your view
Road Cycle with Straight Handle |
Because of thinner tires, resistance because of friction remains very low and the amount of effort riding these kind of cycle becomes very low in comparison to MTB or Standard cycle. People who are focusing of reducing their weight through cycling should buy a road bicycle. This will help them in taking longer and faster rides to reduce their body weight.
India also organizes professional cycle races, take a look of one of the popular races
